The silence is deafening. I've been noticing the increasing number of 'missing persons' cases in our city, all linked to online harassment and stalking. The police seem to be brushing it off as a 'cybercrime issue', but the truth is, it's a symptom of a much larger problem - the erosion of online safety and the impunity with which perpetrators operate.
As a journalist, I've seen the devastating impact this has on victims and their families. The lack of accountability and the constant threat of 'doxxing' (exposing someone's personal info online without consent) makes it almost impossible for people to speak out.
I've been working on a story about online misinformation networks, and the more I dig, the more I realize that this is a ticking time bomb. The spread of disinformation has already led to real-life consequences - from riots to hate crimes.
We need to talk about this more. We need to hold our leaders accountable for creating safer online spaces and protecting citizens
