State Bureau, Jagran, Kolkata. The political controversy has intensified over a statement by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee during a public meeting held on March 25 at Nandprasad Girls High School grounds in Naxalbari in Darjeeling district.

In a video of the meeting circulated on the internet media, it is being claimed that he has openly threatened the CRPF jawans and asked women and girls to be present at the polling stations and use household items if necessary.

He also said that CRPF jawans are young men and if they intervene in such a situation, a criminal case can be registered against them.

Opposition parties have reacted strongly to this statement and alleged that it may affect the election environment. The ruling Trinamool Congress has said that the statement is being presented out of context.

Considering the seriousness of the matter, the Election Commission has called for a detailed report from the Chief Electoral Officer of Bengal. The Commission has made it clear that incidents of any kind of violence or intimidation will not be tolerated during the elections.

Meanwhile, questions are also being raised regarding the security arrangements. Debate has also arisen over the role and intervention of the CRPF deployed at polling stations, especially in rural areas where large participation of women is seen.

The situation on further action will be clear only after the Election Commission report comes, but this development has further heated up the electoral politics of the state.
