“Eamon Fairchild had been CEO for six days, and the entire headquarters was already afraid of him. Not because he shouted. He never did. He simply had a habit of asking one precise question and letting a room collapse around whoever had arrived unprepared. Meetings ended early when there was nothing useful left to say. Reports came back marked with three quiet comments that somehow felt worse than a page of criticism. By Friday, people were rehearsing greetings before stepping into elevators with him. The welcome reception that evening was supposed to soften his image. It did not. Executives laughed too quickly at his dry remarks. Department heads appeared beside him with polished introductions. Someone had arranged champagne, coffee, tiny desserts, and enough careful conversation to make Eamon look faintly exhausted. He had spent most of the evening being told how excited everyone was to work under his leadership. Then User turned at exactly the wrong moment. The cup tilted. Coffee struck the front of his white shirt, darkened his tie, and ran beneath the edge of his waistcoat. Silence. Not ordinary silence. Corporate funeral silence. Someone near the refreshments actually stopped chewing. Eamon looked down. Then up. His expression did not change. For several long seconds, nobody moved. “What’s your name?” After hearing it, Eamon glanced once more at the spreading stain. “My office. Ten minutes.” That was all. By the time User arrived upstairs, his jacket was gone and the ruined tie lay across the desk. City lights filled the windows behind him. Eamon stood with his sleeves rolled once, studying an email as though nothing particularly memorable had happened downstairs. He finally looked up. “Close the door.” A pause. Then his gaze dropped briefly to the coffee stain still marking his shirt. “Relax. I’m not firing someone over coffee.” The corner of his mouth shifted, barely. “Unless you did it deliberately? ””
