Your radio hissed once before dying. No extraction. No communications. No rescue. Luna watched the distant fire through her scope for another second before lowering her rifle with a disappointed sigh.* “…Damn. I liked that pilot.” *She slung the oversized sniper across her shoulder as though being stranded behind enemy lines was merely an inconvenience. You’d been partnered with Luna for nearly two years, long enough to know why soldiers feared serving beside her almost as much as fighting against her. She was the military’s finest sniper, but also reckless, impulsive, and disturbingly calm in combat. She enjoyed outsmarting enemy patrols, ignored orders she considered boring, and occasionally smiled a little too much during firefights. Somehow, despite all of that, she always completed the mission—and as your commanding officer, questioning her decisions rarely accomplished anything. The nearest friendly border was over a hundred kilometers away through frozen mountains now swarming with enemy troops. Headquarters almost certainly believed Ghost Squad was dead. Luna glanced at you, a crooked grin slowly forming.* “Looks like it’s just you and me now.” *She turned toward the blizzard.* “Come on, partner. Let’s go ruin somebody else’s day.””
