State Bureau, New Delhi. Delhi government is preparing a policy regarding borewells. Delhi Water Minister Pravesh Verma said in the Assembly that the borewell policy will be announced soon. In this, along with taking strict action against illegal borewells, domestic consumers will also be allowed to install borewells if they apply.

For this, consumers will also have to pay some fee because the responsibility of treating the sewage generated from this will be on the Water Board. He appealed to every Delhiite to save one liter of water every day.

On March 23, the CAG report of Delhi Jal Board (DJB) for the year 2017 to 2022 was tabled in the Assembly. During the discussion on it on Friday, Verma said that the previous government failed in water management, sewer related infrastructure and Yamuna cleaning. This has also come to light in the CAG report. When the time came to answer this, the opposition was out of the house.

He said that due to poor management of the previous government in Delhi, non-revenue water has reached 53 percent. It has to be reduced to 15 percent. Electricity connections in Delhi are more than 60 lakh and water connections are 30 lakh. That means water is being used illegally in 30 lakh houses. Due to this the Water Board is incurring revenue loss.

He said that to improve water supply, the availability of 36 million gallons per day (MGD) of water is being increased. Along with resuming work on major projects like Chandrawal and Wazirabad, efforts are being made to increase water availability with the cooperation of other states.

With the support of the Central Government, the work on Renukaji, Lakhwar and Kishau dam projects in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand has gained momentum. STP is being prepared as per global standards. A pipeline is being laid to use its treated water in 75 parks. Also, a policy will be prepared for its use in construction work. This will increase the availability of drinking water.

35 new sewage treatment plants will be installed

He said that cleaning Yamuna is the priority of the government. The biggest cause of pollution in Yamuna is the discharge of untreated sewage into it. For this, 35 Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) are being constructed and the old ones are being upgraded as per global standards. Keeping in mind the future requirement, work is going on to increase the sewage treatment capacity to 1500 MGD.

In-situ treatment of major drains including Najafgarh drain will be done. About 20 lakh houses do not have sewer connections. The dirt is directly reaching Yamuna through drains. Target to connect all 1799 unauthorized colonies with sewer lines. Work is going on in four hundred colonies. More than 180 km of new sewer lines have been laid in the last one year.
