20 KM Long Mahava River Is About To Disappear From The Map! Budget Worth Crores Of 'junk' And The System Oblivious
Mahava river in Rajpura block of Sambhal is turning into a heap of garbage, due to which its existence is in danger. The Resource Recovery Center (RRC) set up at the Gram Panchayat level are not working effectively, due to which the waste from villages and markets is being thrown into the river. This 20 km long river, which was once the lifeline, is now a victim of pollution. BDO has assured to take action on the problem on priority.
Pile of garbage on the banks of Mahava river in Rajpura. Awakening
Samvad Sutra, Rajpura (Sambhal). The effort to set up a Resource Recovery Center (RRC) center for garbage disposal at the Gram Panchayat level is being seen being dumped in Rajpura block. The situation is such that the body of Mahava river, which was already struggling to survive, is now being buried under heaps of garbage.
If the situation continues like this, then one day the name of the river will disappear. Because even the people responsible are not paying attention to this. Mahava river of Sambhal is a historical and seasonal river. Which used to flow as a tributary of Ganga (in Amroha, Sambhal, Badaun). Efforts were made to revive it after it dried up three decades ago, but without success.
This river, which flows for a length of about 20 km in the district border, used to provide life to the farmers of villages like Roradeep, Bhiravati, Guretha, Mukutpur, Singhpur, Vaibhud, Chandpura, Bagdher etc. of Dhanari police station area. In which the pure stream of flowing water gave life to animals and birds.
On its banks, Zaid crop was the main source of income for the people. After this, illegal sand mining took place on a large scale on this river in the area of Singhpur and Mukutpur villages, due to which its physical form deteriorated and a flat area was formed there.
The administration had made preparations to renovate the Mahava river, but no attention is being paid to the tributary river. The campaign was started in June 2019 by the then District Magistrate Avinash Krishna Singh. The river was excavated for about two kilometers in Rajpura block.
After this, in 2025, District Magistrate Dr. Rajendra Pensia took this work forward. But, later it stopped. Now the situation is such that the garbage of the villages is being thrown on the river bed. The special thing is that the Resource Recovery Center (RRC) set up in Gram Panchayats has not been operating effectively for a long time.
As a result, garbage continued to accumulate here and now this site has turned into a big heap of garbage. On the other hand, there is a situation of accumulation of garbage on the roadside near the bridge on Bahjoi road. Due to this, the area of filth around the road is increasing. Concerns are being expressed regarding environmental balance and cleanliness due to the accumulation of garbage from Panth market and houses of Rajpura in the bed of Mahava river.
What is Resource Recovery Center?
Resource Recovery Center (RRC) is an important part of the solid waste management system. Here the garbage collected from homes, markets and other places is brought and first sorted. Wet and dry waste are separated, in which compost is prepared from the wet waste.
Whereas dry waste like plastic, paper, metal is sent for recycling. This process reduces the amount of waste, keeps the environment safe and prevents the problem of throwing garbage in the open.
The problem of waste management is serious in Rajpura. This has been taken on priority. Strict instructions have been given to streamline RRC and regular garbage collection. There will be an immediate ban on dumping in Bahjoi Marg and Mahawa River and cleaning will be done, action will also be taken against negligence.
