Haryana government will soon bring a green hydrogen policy to promote green energy. It aims to achieve 250 kilotonnes of green hydrogen production and 2 GW electrolyzer capacity by 2030. The first plant will be set up in Panipat. Biomass projects for stubble disposal and solar panel schemes for farmers are also included. Solar energy is being promoted under PM Surya Ghar and Kusum Yojana, which will make Haryana energy self-reliant.

State Bureau, Panipat. The government, which is engaged in promoting green energy in Haryana, is now preparing to bring a green hydrogen policy soon. By the year 2030, a target has been set to produce 250 kilo tonnes of green hydrogen per year and achieve the capacity of manufacturing two gigawatt (two billion megawatt) electrolyzers. In this series, the first green hydrogen plant will be established in Panipat.

The work on the draft regarding Green Hydrogen Policy is going on at a fast pace from the Energy Department. At the same time, under the campaign of stubble (paddy crop residue) disposal, there is a plan to set up a total of 200 MW biomass power projects with capacity ranging from 9.9 to 25 MW in 13 districts Ambala, Fatehabad, Hisar, Jhajjar, Jind, Kaithal, Karnal, Kurukshetra, Panipat, Rohtak, Sirsa, Sonipat and Yamunanagar. Farmers will be allowed to install solar panels in their fields on existing electricity based tube well connections. The electricity distribution corporations will buy the extra energy generated from this, which will provide additional income to the farmers.

To promote research towards making Haryana an energy self-reliant state, the state government is going to establish a regional research and testing center in collaboration with the Central Power Research Institute. Under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Free Electricity Scheme, about 55 thousand rooftop solar panels have been installed so far. In the new financial year, a target has been set to install rooftop solar panels on the roofs of about 2.25 lakh houses.

Under the Solar Energy Incentive Scheme, a revolving fund of Rs 200 crore has been earmarked, with the help of which interest free gap funding will be provided to non-defaulting consumers, Antyodaya families and government employees. Under PM Kusum Yojana, 1116 solar energy pumps have been installed, due to which Haryana has reached second place in the country. Considering the interest of farmers in this scheme, 35 thousand new solar energy pumps will be installed this year.

Solar power plants (including batteries) of one to three kilowatt capacity will be given on subsidy to families living in slums located at a distance of three to five kilometers from the village population. There are about 76 lakh non-agricultural consumers in the state. So far, smart meters have been installed in about nine lakh consumers. Work on the smart meter scheme for 67 lakh consumers is also going on at a fast pace.

What is green hydrogen?

Green hydrogen is a clean fuel produced from water by electrolysis using renewable energy such as solar power or wind power. It has negligible carbon emissions, making it an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional “grey” or “blue” hydrogen. This is important in decarbonizing heavy industries and transportation.
