Jagran correspondent, Bhagalpur. There seemed to be some relief on Tuesday amidst the voices being raised for a long time regarding the poor condition of Lajpat Park, one of the major public places of the city. To clean the park which was struggling with debris and filth, the corporation's cleaning agency deployed JCB and dumpers to pick up the garbage spread there.
This partially improved the condition of the park and the local people heaved a sigh of relief. This initiative is the result of persistent efforts of Lajpat Park Rescue Sangharsh Committee and its convener Kamal Jaiswal. Ashwani Kumar Pandey of the agency, Naval Hari and Sarfaraz Alam of the Municipal Corporation played an active role in the cleaning work.
However, despite this temporary cleanup effort, the condition of the park still remains worrying. Around 1500 people come for a walk every morning and evening in this park surrounded by a population of about two lakhs. But the condition of basic facilities there remains pathetic.
The men's toilet in the park is lying in a dilapidated condition without a door. Children's swings are broken and their stairs are falling apart, due to which there is a possibility of an accident. The tiled path made for walking is so narrow that even two people cannot walk together.
New steel dustbins have been installed there. But their construction work does not meet the quality standards. Due to lack of cement and ballast their stands are weak and can collapse at any time. The situation in the name of greenery is also disappointing. There is a shortage of seasonal flowers and plants in the park and there is no proper irrigation system for the plants that are there. The gym equipment is broken and needs to be replaced.
The condition of the shed built for women has deteriorated. The tiles of the stadium area have been uprooted. The dilapidated wall near the stage can become the cause of an accident at any time. The responsibility of maintaining the park rests with the Forest Department. But due to departmental apathy the situation is worsening day by day.
So far, no concrete initiative has been seen from the public representatives, MLA, Mayor and councilors regarding solving the problems there and beautifying this historical park and making it convenient.
Lajpat Park Rescue Sangharsh Committee says that they are continuously trying to save the park, but are not getting the expected cooperation from the concerned departments.
Committee convener Kamal Jaiswal sought intervention from the district administration and said that people expect the District Magistrate and the Municipal Commissioner to take concrete steps for the proper development and maintenance of the park. Here, people say that if permanent improvements are not made in time, this important park of the city will be in complete disrepair.
