The central government and the state are jointly working on 5 big high-speed highway and expressway projects in Jharkhand-Bihar. These projects will halve the travel time, which will boost Jharkhand's mineral industry, Bihar's agri-trade and religious tourism. The major ones are Pashupatinath-Baidyanath Dham Corridor, Amas-Darbhanga, Patna-Purnia Expressway, Ranchi-Patna and Aurangabad-Barwadda Highway. These will strengthen the economic connectivity of the two states and give a new impetus to the regional economy.

These projects will not only halve the travel time but will also give a new lease of life to Jharkhand's mineral industry, Bihar's agri-business and religious tourism. Overall, this will strengthen the economic connectivity between the two states and will give a new impetus to the regional economy.
1. Pashupatinath-Baidyanath Dham High-Speed ​​Corridor (250 km expressway)
Bihar government has sent the proposal for a 250 km long greenfield high-speed corridor to the Center in February 2026. Starting from Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal, it will reach Deoghar (Baidyanath Dham) in Jharkhand via Supaul, Saharsa, Khagaria, Munger and Banka districts. Impact: The current 13-14 hour journey will be reduced to just 2-3 hours. Direct benefit to Nepal-India trade, religious tourism and mineral industry of Jharkhand. Bihar Road Construction Minister Dilip Kumar Jaiswal announced this in the 2026-27 budget.
This will be the first access-controlled highway of Bihar. The 189 km long greenfield project will pass through 7 districts of Gaya, Aurangabad, Jehanabad, Patna, Vaishali, Samastipur and Darbhanga. 25% of the work has been completed and is expected to open to traffic by December 2026. Impact: Will directly connect North and South Bihar. Travel time will be halved. There will also be better connectivity for vehicles coming from Jharkhand.
3. Patna-Purnia Expressway (National Expressway-9)
282 km long 6-lane greenfield project. Starting from Patna it will go till Purnia. Land acquisition is underway, bidding likely to be completed by the end of 2026. Total cost around Rs 18,042 crore. Impact: The journey from Patna to Purnia will be completed in 3 hours. Promotion of industries, airport connectivity and trade of Seemanchal region. It is being considered as the first intra-state expressway of Bihar.
4. Ranchi-Patna 4-lane highway
323 km long project. Till Patna via Ranchi, Hazaribagh, Barhi, Koderma. 88% work complete, expected to be completed by December 2027. Cost Rs 5,000 crore. Impact: Will directly connect the capitals of both the states. The current 8-10 hour journey will be significantly reduced. Mineral industry of Jharkhand and agro-industrial sector of Bihar benefit.
5. Aurangabad-Barwadda (Jharkhand Border) 6-lane highway (NH-2 upgrade)
222 km long six-lane upgrade project. Starting from Aurangabad in Bihar, it will go to Barwadda (near Dhanbad) via Jharkhand-Bihar border. NHAI has taken it on priority, work is going on at a fast pace. Impact: This project directly connecting Jharkhand and Bihar will make mineral transportation superfast. Delhi-Kolkata corridor will also provide better connectivity and reduce traffic pressure between the two states.
Industries gain momentum as projects come to ground
Senior journalist Shambhunath Chaudhary says that it is necessary to have prosperous roads for fast and safe transportation of minerals like coal and iron of Jharkhand and easy access to the industrial areas of Bihar. This boosts employment generation and tourism. The regional economy will get a boost.
It depends on both the National Highway Authority of India and the state governments jointly to ensure that these projects are completed on time. Obstacles like land acquisition and environmental clearance are not easy to overcome.
