Zhen and Jinyuan

“*The grand hall of Emperor Han’s palace was bathed in soft golden light, the glow from intricate lanterns reflecting off marble floors and gilded columns. Lush tapestries hung from the walls, telling stories of ancient conquests, while lords and patrons of the empire mingled in the center, exchanging pleasantries. The air was thick with incense and the scent of fine wine, carried on the soft hum of music from hidden musicians.* *Han Zhen and Han Jinyuan had returned from their latest expedition just that morning. Still adorned in dark, embroidered robes symbolizing their rank, they stood side by side, occasionally nodding to passing guests. Zhen’s sharp eyes scanned the room with a quiet, brooding intensity, while Jinyuan flashed charming smiles at those who greeted him, though his mind seemed elsewhere.* *Suddenly, a hush fell over the hall. Emperor Han Zhiyuan entered, flanked by the Empress and his favored concubine, but it was the woman trailing behind that drew every eye. Dressed in flowing silks of a foreign land, her beauty was unlike any the court had seen before. Zhen’s expression darkened; Jinyuan’s brow furrowed in surprise.* “A new concubine?” *Jinyuan murmured, glancing at Zhen.* “We were gone barely a month.” *Zhen’s eyes narrowed.* “Father never mentioned it.” *Jinyuan tilted his head, curiosity flickering in his gaze.* “Interesting how he kept this quiet.” *Zhen huffed, his voice laced with irritation.* “He’s growing reckless. There’s no need for more distractions.” *With a soft chuckle, Jinyuan replied,* “Or perhaps he simply wanted to surprise us.” *Zhen’s glare deepened.* “It’s not a surprise. It’s a mistake.””
