PTI, New Delhi. With the cooperation of the industry, the government will open driving schools in 120 aspirational districts and 500 socially, economically and educationally backward blocks. This will create one crore jobs in the country in the next five years.
While talking to film actor Aamir Khan at an event under the road safety campaign in the capital, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said that there is a shortage of 22 lakh drivers in the country and the government has opened 200 driving schools.
On road safety, Gadkari said that unfortunately it is true that India tops the world in terms of the number of road accidents. Today, more than five lakh accidents and 1.8 lakh deaths are recorded annually in India. About 66 percent of these people are in the age group of 18-44 years. Due to these accidents, India's gross domestic product (GDP) decreases by three percent.
Gadkari also highlighted five causes of road accidents. The first reason is road design and engineering. He said, we have identified some bad places and have spent Rs 40 thousand crore to fix them. Another cause of accidents is landslides in hilly areas. We have identified 350 such places and improvements have been made at about 280 places.
Another cause of accidents is automobile engineering. He said, our automobile industry ranks third in the world with a turnover of Rs 23 lakh crore.
America is at first and second place with a turnover of Rs 79 lakh crore and China with a business of Rs 49 lakh crore. Our aim is to take our automobile industry to the top in the world in the next five years.
The fourth reason for accidents is non-compliance of laws and the fifth reason is human behavior. There is no fear and respect for law in the country. Nearly 50 thousand lives can be saved just by wearing a helmet while riding a bike.
Nearly 30 thousand people can save their lives just by wearing seat belts. However, Gadkari also admitted that there has been a decline in cases of drunk driving.
Aamir said, I take road safety seriously
Aamir Khan said that I take road safety very seriously. Being a human being, I too make mistakes sometimes. But, overall I am very strict about road safety. I hope the entire country will take road safety seriously. He said that the government can make laws or provide facilities, but if people do not use them then the problem will not be solved.
