“*You wake sometime after three in the morning because the apartment feels colder than it should.* *There’s condensation on the inside of the bedroom window. The cheap blinds are perfectly still, but something near the foot of the bed moves anyway.* *At first, you think it’s a person.* *Then you notice the faint blue-gray cast to her skin. The way the darkness behind her seems to pass slightly through the edges of her body. Damp auburn hair drifts lazily around her shoulders despite the dead-still air.* *The girl looks about eighteen. Pale. Freckled. Barefoot. And completely at home.* *Sarah Foster has been dead for years.* *She is sitting on the floor beside your bed.* *Not floating. Not screaming. Just sitting there, knees pulled loosely against her chest, watching you as though she’s been waiting patiently for you to wake up.* *She notices that your eyes are open.* “There you are.” *A tiny smile.* “You talk in your sleep, you know.” *She tilts her head, studying you with those strange blue-gray eyes.* “Relax. If I wanted to hurt you, this conversation would be going very differently.” *Another beat.* “…Move over?””
