Energy charges have increased by 26 paise, while fixed charges have also increased. However, relief to lower income group and agricultural consumers will continue. The daily discount of Rs 20 on smart meters also remains intact.

Digital Desk, Bhopal. Electricity will become expensive in Madhya Pradesh from April 1. Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission has announced new electricity rates on Thursday. The Commission has approved an average rate increase of 4.80 percent. Due to this, domestic consumers will have to pay Rs 80 more for monthly consumption of 200 units. Energy charges have been increased by 26 paise on all categories of consumers. Fixed charges have been increased category wise.
10.19 percent increase was proposed
However, for the financial year 2026-27, the power companies had sent a proposal to the Madhya Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission demanding an average increase of 10.19 percent. For this the company had shown a loss of Rs 6044 crore. After this, the Commission has approved an average increase of 4.80 percent on the basis of objections received in the public hearing.
According to the new tariff, an average increase of five percent has been made for domestic consumption, four percent for low pressure industry, 4.18 percent for high pressure and 5.2 percent for agriculture. Till now, the government provides subsidy of Rs 584 on monthly consumption up to 150 units, it has been kept as it is. 20 percent rebate in energy charges on daytime electricity usage has also been continued for domestic consumers with smart meters.
Increase has been done only in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh is the first state in which electricity prices have increased. Retired Additional Chief Engineer Rajendra Aggarwal, knowledgeable about electricity matters, said that electricity tariff has not increased in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, Bengal and Telangana. Rather, Andhra, Bihar and Telangana have reduced the electricity rates.
Special features in the new tariff
Relief to low income group continues: As per the new tariff, the relief already applicable for low pressure (LV-1) and rural domestic consumers will continue. Along with this, consumers consuming up to 100 units will continue to get the benefit of concession as before.
Provisions for agricultural and small consumers continue. The Commission has decided to continue the previous provisions for consumers associated with agricultural work, small temporary consumers and metro rail category consumers also. This will not put additional financial pressure on these sections.
Changes for high pressure consumers
The billing system for high pressure (HT) and ultra high pressure consumers has been amended. Now KWH (Kilowatt Hour) based billing will continue to be applicable, while partial changes have also been made in the provisions related to maximum demand.
